We've been testing Icebreaker summer-weight merino wool for a few months, and we are extremely impressed. Great in hot or cool weather. And if hot turns cold and wet, no problem -- you're wearing pure wool. We're sticking with Woolpower Ullfrotte for the cold weather base layer, but even there, Icebreaker can fill the bill -- and they offer a wide variety of items, with many designed specifically for women and children.

My sons Alex and Zack had some luck in the 2009 drawings. Alex drew a great bull elk tag for New Mexico's Unit 34, and hunted with John Jaquez of San Juan River Outfitters. Zack took me along for a moose in New Hampshire's Unit E2.

Icebreaker and King of the Mountain

Like Woolpower, Icebreaker makes their garments from merino wool. I really like their summer-weight items as a base layer in cool or warm weather. In fact, their summer-weight items are terrific in serious heat ..... such as 80 or 90F (27-32C). I wore Icebreaker in Hong Kong with 90F temperature and humidity about 100% and it was great. Alex loved it as a base layer for October elk in New Mexico at 8000 feet, with cool mornings and warm afternoons.
