From the Field
Nunavut
Several years ago the Canadian government returned control of portions of the Northwest Territories to the Inuits, who renamed their land Nunavut. In September of 2006, my son Alex traveled to Nunavut with my buddy Al Kuntz, of AlsAdventures.com.
In 2005, Al took the world record (bow) Barren Ground Caribou on his hunt with Ryan St. John of www.HenikLakeAdventures.com.
Alex took these two beauties and had a fantastic time with Al and Ryan and his team!!
Here is a shot of our buddy Al Kuntz and his book muskox from Nunavut, March 2007. Al and his group were the first non-Inuits to ever hunt this area. Winds were blowing 20-60 miles per hour and temperatures ranged from 40 below to 78 below zero every day. For those of us who like to note such things, -40F is the same as -40C ...... really cold! And -78 below? Al wore his Standmaster Jacket System and Bibs all the time. He added the brown windbreaker shell when the winds got really out of hand. He also wore the shell for the field-dressing and skinning, to keep his wool clean. We always recommend packing a true storm shell for any trip where you may run up against extreme winds or sustained heavy rains.
